How Much Breast Milk Should My Baby Drink?

One of my big questions as a mom was always, how much should my baby be drinking? The real answer completely depends on your baby, but here's a guideline for what most babies drink...

Baby Age    Amount     Schedule
1 month       2-3 oz.       every 2-3 hours
2 months     2-4 oz.       every 3-4 hours
3 months     3-5 oz.       every 4-5 hours
4 months     4-6 oz.       every 4-5 hours
5 months     5-7 oz.       every 4-6 hours
6 months     6-8 oz.       every 4-6 hours

These amounts are based on a formula fed baby. I have breastfed/pumped for multiple babies, and none of them ever took more than 4 oz. The beauty of breastmilk, among other things, is that the composition changes to meet your baby's needs, and it becomes more concentrated as your baby ages. Thus, your baby won't need 7 oz of breastmilk at a sitting. If your baby does, you might be overfeeding your baby or using high flow bottle nipples.

Hi Mom to Many,

Thanks for sharing your experience with your baby's milk needs. It's great to hear other mom's experiences.

You are correct that how much a baby will drink can really range; I have breast milk moms that feed below this chart and above it as well.

I've found in talking to moms, a lot of factors play into how much their babies drink, the main factors included:
- Feeding on Demand vs, Scheduled Feedings
- Exclusively Pumping vs Pumping & Breast Feeding
- When Solids are Introduced
- Baby's Size & Metabolism

Most importantly moms should always take feeding cues from their babies (rooting & feeding signals, wet/dirty diapers, and weight) to determine how much they should be eating.

Thanks!
